2005 was the year we first founded Menya Shono. At the time we were putting our hearts and souls into expanding the business, focusing on making each and every person who walked through our doors happy by serving up delicious ramen, one bowl at a time. Fast forward to March 11th 2011; the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck the heart of the Tohoku region of Japan, shutting down whole cities and leaving people without shelter and food. That’s where we felt like our ramen was needed the most, so we packed our bags and shipped out to Ishimaki to help with the relief effort. At the time in the disaster-stricken areas gas and electricity weren’t available, making a hot bowl of ramen a godsend for people who were forced to eat cold food day in and day out. Smiling faces came by the hundreds, everyone waiting their turn for a hot bowl. This is the moment that I really felt the amazing power of ramen. It had the ability to brighten the day of the survivors and bring warmth to their lives. Experiencing this firsthand gave me the determination to devote myself completely to bringing the joy of ramen to people everywhere.
Using that motivation, I continued to focus on laying the infrastructure for this business by opening up further branches in Bunkyo and Shinjuku, near our first shop which led to more efficient information systems, in-house logistics, and branch operations.
We’ve also made similar moves abroad, opening up branches overseas. Additionally, we went through with establishing a school, taking that next step in globalization by communicating an excitement for Japan while teaching the world about the Japanese food culture of ramen, along with the Japanese approach to high quality service and attention to detail.
What the people of Japan value is changing rapidly, but we believe our values of creating real flavor, bringing enjoyment to food, and inspiring people through our work, are in demand more than ever. Going forward with the focus of, “Creating the ramen bowl of tomorrow” while delving into the world of “flavor and heart”, this company aims to become a global corporation working hard to contribute to society through the trust our customers have in our top-quality service and signature taste.
